The police of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, in the district of Muzaffarnagar, have saved 12 men, including one from Nepal, who were promised employment but kept as bonded laborers in a disposable plate manufacturing unit for more than two years. Upon receiving information regarding the matter, police conducted raids by using a decoy team, and found out that the victims were being kept locked in the factory, made to work for 24 hours, guarded by pit bulls, given a single dry flatbread to eat, and regularly thrashed. The mobile phones of the victims had been seized and their identity documents burned in order to stop them from escaping. While two persons have been arrested, the owner of the factory has not been traced yet. The incident has brought about widespread criticism across the nation from the opposition leader Rahul Gandhi over the existence of bonded labor.
